Lively Beach in Veules

A coastal genre scene, a Normandy beach town with cliffs and figures at the shore, signed and dated directly on the canvas: “Stember, Veules, 1897.” Found via a MutualArt listing.

Research note (2026-09): flagged by the family for a closer look before being treated as confirmed. This subject and setting is a sharp departure from the portraits, society subjects, and salon nudes that make up the rest of the known catalog, so it is worth confirming this is not a different, unrelated painter working the same resort circuit in the 1890s, and whether the family’s own record of Stember’s European travel matches a visit to Veules-les-Roses around 1897. It is, however, the only work found in this research with a specific place and year written directly on the canvas by the artist’s own hand. See research/images-catalog.md.
